Introduction to Summer Study Courses

In September 2009 Durham University will host an excellent programme of Summer Study breaks.

Summer Study will be running from Van Mildert College. The college enjoys a natural lakeside setting with peaceful surroundings in one of the country’s most spectacular and historic cities that makes Van Mildert College an ideal venue for Summer Study. With ample grounds it offers a quiet location within easy reach of Durham City on foot. The college is also a short walk from the Botanic Gardens, with its collection of exotic plants, or the Oriental Museum, which houses the finest oriental collection in England outside London.

Each comfortable en suite bedroom is equipped with shower/WC/wash-basin and shaver point. Tea and Coffee-making facilities are provided in all rooms as well as offering TV lounges. A modern Dining Hall, good food with a warm and friendly welcome from all our staff will make this a place you will want to revisit. Special dietary requirements can be accommodated where notified in advance.

Our study holidays are based along the same lines as the former Summer Academy study breaks held for many years in Durham: many of our guests return year after year for our very special summer schools. All our courses, which are residential, offer expert guidance from experienced course tutors, with a learning environment that goes beyond the classroom on course-related field trips, walks and special access to local attractions.

All Summer Study courses provide participants with a balance of academic study and leisure time, enabling you to learn more about your chosen subject, to enjoy meeting your fellow guests and explore the local area. Where appropriate, Summer Study is enhanced by visits from guest lecturers who offer further insight into the course of study.

We also provide some evening entertainment, from a lively quiz (we promise not to make it too hard this year!), to perhaps a musical evening or perhaps a film show or a talk on the history and heritage of the North East of England.
