BY ROAD:
Durham City is easy to reach from the A1 motorway. Leave the A1(M) at Junction 62 onto the A690 Durham to Sunderland road and follow signs to Durham City. There are beautiful views on the A66 approach route from the Lake District and M6 over the Pennines. Express coach services operate daily between Durham and other major centres. Direct services link Durham with most major centres around Britain. Trains on the East Coast main line cover the journey from London in under 3 hours. A taxi will take you from the station overlooking the City to the College in 5 minutes.
BY ROAD FROM THE SOUTH:
Directions to Durham by the A1 and A1(M) leave A1(M) at Junction 61, signposted A177 Peterlee and Coxhoe. At the roundabout take first left on to A177 Bowburn and Durham. Go through Bowburn and Shincliffe; continue for approx. 3-4 miles. Ascend to a roundabout, take first left past University Science Site (on your left) and turn left at traffic lights by the New Inn pub. Ascend the hill (South Road) and take the first right onto Elvet Hill Road. Van Mildert College is on your left.
BY ROAD FROM THE NORTH:
Leave A1(M) at Junction 62; take the A690 to Durham. At the second roundabout turn left across the River Wear. Continue straight on through two sets of traffic lights and ascend past the University Science site which is on the left. Turn right onto Elvet Hill Road which is the right hand turn at the top of the hill. Van Mildert College is on your left.
BY AIR AND SEA: Durham is just over 20 miles from Newcastle and Teesside Airports, both of which have regular domestic and international flights. A rail/metro connection links Durham to Newcastle Airport. Ferry services operate from North Shields (near Newcastle upon Tyne), to Scandinavian ports and the Netherlands.
