The Magnificent City of Durham

The University City of Durham provides an ideal setting for Summer Study breaks.

The City’s Norman Cathedral and Castle, which dominate the skyline, are a World Heritage Site. Radio 4 listeners actually voted the Cathedral into first place in its competition to find Britain’s Best Building. The University’s Chancellor, author Bill Bryson, is enthusiastic about the City’s charms and in particular the Cathedral, which he believes to be “the best Cathedral on planet Earth.”

You will find that Durham is a compact city, but has much to offer visitors. A long-established, traditional covered Market can be found next to the cobbled Market Place, where there is street entertainment, particularly during July and August. On the third Thursday of the month there is a Farmers’ Market where you’ll find many local specialities. In the streets leading off the Market Place there are a wide variety of shops – from national chains to specialist clothing and craft shops.

The Durham Heritage Centre and Museum based at St. Mary le Bow Church near the Cathedral tells Durham story from the 10th century. The Gala Theatre provides a venue for tourist information, drama, exhibitions and other entertainment. For further sightseeing, take one of the paths leading down to the riverbank, or book a trip on the ‘Prince Bishop’ river cruiser for a different perspective on the City.
