The History and Landscape of the Area

For Summer Study guests who may want to extend their holiday and venturing further afield, North East England has much to offer.

For dramatic landscapes and beautiful countryside, the region boasts both the Northumberland National Park and part of the North York Moors National Park. Two areas - the North Pennines and the Northumberland Coast – have been designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Durham University and St Mary's College, on the outskirts of Durham City and close to major routes, provide an ideal base from which to tour the area. North East England boasts many historic market towns and villages which are attractions in their own right.

Traditional and farmers’ markets are held on a regular basis in many towns and for those who enjoy shopping there are many shops offering local crafts and produce of all kinds. Summer Study guests tend to be interested in history and heritage, and there is so much to explore in the area.

There is, of course, a rich Christian heritage: St Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne, was laid to rest in Durham Cathedral. John Wesley, founder of Methodism visited the North East on many occasions. Throughout the area there are fine churches, from the magnificent Durham Cathedral to the oldest Methodist Church in continuous use in the world at Ireshopeburn in Weardale, to one of the finest restored Saxon Churches in Europe, in the hamlet of Escomb.

Industrial history is celebrated at the world-famous Beamish Open Air Museum near Durham City. Killhope, The North of England Lead Mining Museum at Weardale, offers a “hands-on” experience of life for lead-miners in past centuries.

The area’s Railway heritage can be explored at the Locomotion in Shildon. These are just a few of the area’s many attractions. To access web sites giving more details about North East England, click on to our 'Useful Links' page menu button above.
